Former Galesburg Resident, Basketball Player Pleads Not Guilty to Felony Sex Charge
A former Galesburg man known for his time as a star athlete on the Galesburg Silver Streaks basketball team will stand trial on charges accusing him of raping a woman at a party several weeks ago.

Knox County Circuit Court Judge Dwayne Morrison Monday found probable cause for 19-year old John Peters to be tried on felony charges of Criminal Sexual Assault and Unlawful Restraint.

Peters was arrested January 25th, and Galesburg Police Officer Bryan Anderson testified at a preliminary hearing Monday that a 18-year old woman claims Peters assaulted her at a party early January 25th at a home in the one-hundred block of Duffield Avenue. Anderson says the victim told her she was in a restroom when Peters entered the restroom, pushed her down, and committed the sexual assault.

The victim, Anderson claims, tried to escape the bathroom several times but couldn't, and when she called for help, no one heard her because of loud music.

But during cross-examination by Chicago-based defense attorney Loren Blumenfeld, Anderson claimed that the victim had been asking about Peters during the night, and at one point the two were believed to be seen kissing. Blumenfeld says the sex the two allegedly had was consensual.

Peters pleaded not guilty through Blumenfeld and demanded a trial by jury. A June first pre-trial hearing date has been set, with a possible trial date of June 15th.

Peters remains free from custody after posting bond -- he was a player on the Black Hawk College men's basketball team at the time of the arrest.
