Peoria Makes Lengthy List of Potential Landmarks
PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- The city of Peoria has put together a list of 115 historic properties around town that may be considered for landmark status.

City Council members signed off on the list Tuesday but didn't commit to acting on it.

Preservationists, though, called the move a good first step toward protecting a variety of city landmarks.

The locations include a city visitors center that was built in 1852 as a grocery store and saloon. Also listed are the Madison Theater, which was built in 1920, and a number of homes dating to the late 1800s.

Councilmen George Jacob and Ryan Spain expressed concern the list could be used against developers who want to make changes in a property.

Any exterior changes planned for Peoria's two dozen designated landmarks require city approval.
