City Approves State Deal for Overpass Money
Most of the funding is now in place -- or, at least, city officials hope it will be -- for the first of three rail crossing overpasses the city has planned in the next several years.

The Galesburg City Council Monday night approved a $14 million funding agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation for the project to build the proposed West Main Street overpass, construction on which is expected to begin as late as October.

The money is coming from last year's capital construction bill which isn't believed to be funded yet -- which led to a concern by 7th ward alderman Mike Lummis.

"Worst case scenario, given the state of the state's finances, and the federal finances, is it a possibility that we could get this underway, get it 50% completed, and suddenly, the money dries up?" Lummis asked.

City officials say that's unfortunately always a possibility these days, but now that the agreement is being signed, the state is obligated to pay up, which it will do in three segments.

The federal government has agreed to several million dollars for all three overpasses as announced recently by Senator Dick Durbin, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe is agreeing to fund 5-percent, or about three-quarters of a million dollars, toward the construction of this overpass.
