City Says Potholes Bigger Problem Than Snow Removal
Clearing the snow from the City of Galesburg's roads hasn't been a problem this year. But the City's Public Works Director says something else related to the weather is.

Larry Cox says potholes are cropping up seemingly everywhere. They usually form when moisture forms on the roads after a thaw, then temperatures go back down below freezing again.

Just how bad are the potholes this year?

"I don't know how many time we've been out, but we've used several tons of patch material already," Cox said.

Cox tells WGIL while public calls are always welcome when potholes are spotted, there's a process the city uses to look for them already in place.

"Our guys that have snow plow routes also have a pothole route," Cox said. "It's the same route as their snow plow route, so they become familiar with the streets as they're plowing them; and then as they go back and fill the potholes, they basically know where they're at from driving on the street frequently."

Cox describes this year, so far, as one of the worst he's seen for potholes, and the more snow we get, and the more freeze-thaw cycles we get, the problem may not get better anytime soon.

Cox says, as you can expect, the older roads in town are the ones that will be most vulnerable to potholes.
