Meeting on GHS Restructuring Plan Thursday Night -- Open to the Public
Galesburg High School is in the middle of figuring out how it will best address a graduation rate that's declining, and Thursday night, the public is being asked to help.

A community meeting is being held at GHS Thursday where District-205 administrators will present information on how the graduation rate got to be down to 76.5% percent in 2009 (Source: Interactive Illinois Report Card).

District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Joel Estes says while a lot of attention has been given to a steep decline in the gradation rate specifically among African-American students, that doesn't begin to tell the story.

"Students with disabilities graduation rate...they dropped from 82.1% to 57.4%," Estes said. "And, economically-disadvantaged students dropped from 94.3% in 2002, to 58.2% this past year. Those are stunning numbers."

Estes says once the plan is finalized it will be brought back to the District-205 school board for approval, and would be put into effect next year.

Thursday night's public meeting at Galesburg High School runs from 7 to 8:30.
