Home Show Being Held in Monmouth for First Time
Officials in Monmouth say they are excited to try an event for the first time, and despite the down economy, they're already pleased with the participation.

The Monmouth-Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the first ever Home Show Saturday from 9am to 3pm at the old First Street Armory. Chamber Executive Director Angela McElwee says there will be participation from nearly 35 different Monmouth businesses ranging from banks to building firms.

And McElwee tells WGIL it was surprisingly easy to get businesses to say yes.

"I had one member last spring really encouraging me to move forward with it for 2010," McElwee said. "We started working on the event really hard back in November, making calls to the merchants. Based upon the encouragement we received, and the initial response when we started making calls, we didn't anticipate a problem."

McElwee says she also wasn't concerned about the economy, saying she believes there is always interest in topics from home maintenance to lawn care regardless of the situation.

McElwee says admission is free, food will be available for sale with proceeds benefiting the Armory, and there will also be a presentation on home communications around 11 am Saturday.
