Local Congressional Candidate Says GOP Can Win
An Illinois congressional candidate says it will take strong local tickets for Republicans to make a difference statewide.

Moline businessman Bobby Schilling is running in the 17th Congressional District, where the last time a Republican won was 1980. The incumbent is U.S. Rep. Phil Hare ( D-Rock Island ). The district covers most of Knox County.

He says a win for him will require a strong grass-roots effort. He says the Republican Party in general needs both quantity and quality when it comes to local candidates. "You can’t have weak candidates," Schilling said. "You have to have 'em strong across the board as much as possible, because if you have a bunch of weak candidates, it tends to slow the voters up. They're not interested in coming out."

Schilling says he is encouraged by the U.S. Senate victory last month by Scott Brown in equally Democratic Massachusetts. He says some of the same conditions exist in Illinois that contributed to the Republican win in Massachusetts.

Hare, meanwhile, will be holding a series of campaign events throughout the district Monday and Tuesday, including one Tuesday at noon in Galesburg.
