Canton Rep. Wants to Look Into Unfunded Mandates
It's a pet peeve of local governments -- the unfunded mandate. The chairman of the Elementary and Secondary Education Committee in the Illinois House, State Rep. Mike Smith (D-Canton), is asking five of his members to form a sub-committee that will intercept bills which would place a mandate on local school districts.

Rep. Fred Crespo (D-Hoffman Estates) will chair the subcommittee, which will include Reps. Suzie Bassi (R-Palatine), Lisa Dugan (D-Kankakee), Harry Osterman (D-Chicago), and Sandra Pihos (R-Glen Ellyn).

Smith says this will free up the committee for other matters while the sub-committee gives further scrutiny to the possible mandates; he promises the sub-committee will not simply be a place where, as he put it, "bills go to die."
