Kids in Early Childhood Programs Could Ride School Buses After All
A school-bus practice that wastes gas but preserves some reimbursement money could be a thing of the past in Illinois.

Districts put their transportation money into jeopardy by letting children in early-childhood programs ride the same buses as kids in grades K-12. That's because the reimbursement is only for the K-12 students. State Rep. Roger Eddy (R-Hutsonville) says districts sidestep a penalty by actually sending a second bus for pre-kindergarteners, sometimes to the same house at the same time as a grade-schooler.

Eddy is sponsoring a bill which has passed a House committee and would allow districts to carry the younger children on the same bus routes without penalty.

HB 4879 has passed the House Elementary and Secondary Education Committee.
