Meister Out in U.S. Senate Race
A long-shot candidate in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate is now out, and is backing the front-runner.

Lawyer Jacob Meister says he's getting out for the good of the Democratic Party, and throwing his support, however meager, to state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias.

"Today represents a time when doing the right thing means taking one for the team," Meister said Sunday at a rally at Teamsters headquarters in Chicago. "And today represents a time when real leadership means stepping up and stepping aside."

Meister's campaign never took off; he barely registered in some public opinion polls.

Giannoulias says he's proud to have Meister's support. Meister says he believes Giannoulias will be effective in helping steer an economic recovery that produces good-paying jobs.

The campaign of rival David Hoffman had long speculated that Meister was planted in the race by Giannoulias to beat up on Hoffman during debates, allowing Giannoulias to push a positive message. A Giannoulias strategist denies that.

Though Meister is ending his campaign, his name still will be on the ballot on Tuesday, and any votes he gets, or has gotten in early voting and absentee voting, will count.
