Human Relations Commission Likely Will Look at More Cases
The City of Galesburg's Human Relations Commission -- even as it expands by order of Mayor Sal Garza to deal with community and neighborhood issues -- is working on getting a better handle of the original issue it was charged with addressing.

The commission Tuesday discussed the process by which complaints of discrimination were brought before them. They say in the last five years, the commission has only been called on to investigate three discrimination cases, as determined by the city's Human Services Coordinator.

The city's Risk Manager, Mike Crummer, was appointed Coordinator following JoAnn Harris' retirement last month, and tells commission chair Bob Clark whether exactly what should have happened with such cases as reported to the city is a bit unclear.

"In the past, it was said that the coordinator makes that decision," Crummer said. "I will, as I obtain that information...if the individuals do actually follow through (with their complaints), that's something that actually I would bring forward the information for (the commission) to make that determination."

Crummer is investigating how three other cases of discrimination were handled, but says he's having trouble finding information on them after sifting through boxes of documents. He does say since the commission's last meeting February 2nd, two discrimination complaints have come into the city.

The complainants, Crummer says, are filling out the city's six-page discrimination complaint form.
