Abingdon Sends Two to Emergency Preparedness Meetings
The city of Abingdon will have representation at meetings that will be held to develop a disaster plan for Knox County's incorporated communities.

Abingdon Mayor Roger Stegall told the city council Tuesday night that he received a letter from the Galesburg/Knox County Emergency Management Agency explaining the process for developing the plan. Stegall says the agency received a grant to work with SIU-Carbondale, and the grant funding requires holding meetings with representatives from each city or village in attendance.

Stegall says the disaster mitigation planning process is comprised of five meetings, the first of which was held earlier this month. The next meeting is March 18th. Specific tasks are to be carried out at each meeting.

Stegall says there's no cost to any city or village. He recommended that police chief Fred Andrews and public works superintendent Kirt Links attend the meetings on behalf of Abingdon, a move that received no opposition.

SIU-C will put the plan together after all of the meetings are held. It'll be submitted to the state for approval after that, then to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for its okay. Each individual jurisdiction will pass a resolution to adopt the plan after it's approved by FEMA and the feds contact the Galesburg/Knox County Emergency Management Agency.
