State Bills Piling Up for Knoxville School District
POSTED 12:59am 2/18/10 He wouldn't say what specifically would be done, but the outgoing Superintendent of the Knoxville School District is projecting cuts will have to be made if the state doesn't pay its bills.

Doctor Larry Carlton told the District-202 board Wednesday night that the state currently owes $164,000 in back payments to the district, covering transportation and other needs, which is the equivalent of four jobs.

Carlton says, however, the figure could get a lot worse if proposed state cuts for next fiscal year in terms of per pupil spending are realized.

"If the foundation level goes from $6,100 to $5,500 next year, that equates to about $650,000," Carlton said. "Based on (an average salary of) $40,000, that's 16 teachers."

Board member John Putnam asked if the amount the district was owed could be put on the digital school marquis in front of Knoxville High School, similar to what Galesburg District 205 has done at his schools, and Carlton said yes.

Carlton says he is looking at cuts in various areas, but declined to say what those might be, but suggested unfunded mandates, extra-curricular activities, and support staff all could be at risk.

The District-202 Board Wednesday night did approve a one-year contract extension for curriculum director Gay Johnson.
