Giannoulias Democratic Senate Nominee
In a preview of what's to come between now and November, Democratic U. S. Senate nominee Alexi Giannoulias branded his Republican opponent, U. S. Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park), as a "Washington insider" who cares more about special interests than about the people of Illinois.

And, in a move to brand his campaign, the backdrop on Giannoulias' stage in a Chicago hotel ballroom bore no sign of the candidate's name or the office he is seeking; rather, it read: "JOBS: the BIG issue."

Giannoulias took 39 percent of the vote to David Hoffman’s 34 percent in winning the Democratic primary.

When asked about the bank his father founded, Broadway Bank in Chicago, operating under a consent decree, Giannoulias said the truth is his family's business is not immune to the challenges facing others. New publicity about the bank's questionable loans could not help Hoffman, the former inspector general for the city of Chicago, beat the first-term state treasurer.

Cheryle Jackson, a former spokeswoman for Gov. Rod Blagojevich who later headed the Chicago Urban League, finished third in the race. Dr. Robert Marshall of Burr Ridge also ran.
