Task Force Targets Nursing Home Violence in Report
CHICAGO (AP) -- A senior citizen group is working with an Illinois state senator to write consolidated legislation on nursing home reform.

AARP said Friday it's working closely with Sen. Heather Steans of Chicago on a bill to target the safety of residents and how nursing homes operate.

Gov. Pat Quinn's nursing home safety task force released its final report Friday. The report places blame for violence on the state's "over-reliance on nursing homes" to house the mentally ill after state mental institutions closed.

It calls for more supportive housing for people with serious mental illness.

AARP state director Bob Gallo says it's critical to rebalance long-term care for the mentally ill, but not at the expense of community-based options for seniors and the physically disabled.
