Drive Underway to Change State Constitution Instead of a Rewrite
Illinois voters have not jumped on an idea to re-write the state's Constitution, but now comes a chance to change it.

Organizers of the Put Back Amendment are collecting signatures; they need 500,000 by May 2nd to get it on the ballot in November.

Amendment author John Bambenek, political director of Main Street Campaigns, says the Republican Liberty Caucus of Illinois is now endorsing the idea. The amendment would, among other things, make Illinois' legislature unicameral, with each district carrying three representatives.

Other provisions include term limits of eight years for all lawmakers and four years in legislative leadership. Bambenek says, "Our current House Speaker [Mike Madigan (D-Chicago)] has been there about 28 years, and he essentially controls the entire legislature. That's power one person should not have, going back to the reason we send 177 people to Springfield, not just one."
