| More Possible Changes Added to District 205 Budget List |
Nearly everyone associated with the Galesburg School District has had their chance to suggest ways to cut $2.5 million out of the district's budget.
Monday night it was the Galesburg School Board's turn. The board held what was described as a brainstorming session, where members essentially threw out ideas for ways the district can save money, on top of a proposed list of cuts and other cost savings available on the district's website. The session was similar to ones other district staff members had before now.
It wasn't the most popular new idea voted on by either of two groups combining administrators and board members, but speaking for his group, District-205 Superintendent Doctor Gene Denisar suggested something many other government entities are doing these days.
"Every group that I know of in the state or others that are impacted, are taking one, three, five days off -- not a vacation day, not a personal day, not a professional leave day," Denisar said. "It's a furlough day. It's an unpaid day that you don't work and you don't get paid."
Of the eight choices voted on by the board in a straw poll after nearly two-dozen ideas were first presented, the top two were using some of the district's cash reserves even if it means not having recommended amounts on hand, and cuts in administrative positions.
Those ideas along with some suggested by students and staff alike will be packaged together with the current list, and a final recommendation will come in April, with a vote in May. |
