Grant Helps Fund Knox College Youth Initiative
Knox College has received a grant from a major insurance provider that a professor says will help students who are a part of an important local scholarship program.

Bloomington-based State Farm has presented Knox with a $35,000 grant that, assistant Education Studies Professor Stephen Schroth says will help create a program called Project GEM -- or, Galesburg Enrichment Mentoring.

Schroth tells WGIL the project will start by helping students in the Gale Scholars program.

"About 15 Knox students are going to start a "Junior Great Books" program for some of the George Washington Gale Scholars at (Galesburg) High School," Schroth said. "What they're going to do is meet with these kids weekly, and have them reading some of the world's great works of civic thought and environmental science thought."

Schroth says that will range from the Declaration of Independence, to works from Gandhi and Henry David Thoreau.

The Gale Scholars will then in turn help lead discussions in younger grades on their books.

The grant, Schroth says, will cover all aspects of the program, from transportation to and from Knox for Gale Scholar students, books, and other materials.
