38 Felony Charges Against Dog-Shooting Suspect
WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) -- Lake County authorities have filed 38 felony charges against a Grayslake-area man accused of shooting a stray dog outside his house.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Michael Mermel said Wednesday that 57-year-old Elvin Dooley faces a mandatory prison sentence of three to 14 years if convicted of the most serious charges.

Dooley is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and animal torture for shooting a black chow mix dog Jan. 26.

Mermel said when police went to question Dooley, they found 17 firearms, including an assault rifle, plus several thousand rounds of ammunition.

The grand jury approved 18 counts of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and 18 counts of possession of a weapon without a state Firearms Owner's Identification card.

Dooley was held on $250,000 bond.
