Warren County Sheriff Clears First Hurdle
The incumbent Warren County sheriff had little trouble defeating his opponent in the primary election, but he'll have to overcome one more roadblock before he gets another term.

Martin Edwards held off Republican challenger P.J. Brooks by a sizable margin - about 70 percent to 30 percent of the total votes cast in the race - for the GOP nomination. Edwards tells WGIL the voter turnout made things interesting.

"The numbers were low (Tuesday), and you're probably going to see that statewide," Edwards said. "But, the ones that did get out there punched the ticket for me, and I just thank them a lot for that."

Voter turnout in Warren County was around 22 percent, higher than both Knox County and the City of Galesburg.

Edwards, who is vying for his second full term as Warren County's sheriff, is expected to face Independent candidate and former Monmouth police chief Mike Sage in November.

Brooks, who is employed at Henry Hill Correctional Center, couldn't say for sure if he planned to run for sheriff or another position again in the future.

"That's something we're going to have to look at down the road," Brooks said. "I think I'll have to take the Brett Favre routine on that."
