Monmouth-Roseville Curriculum Changes Could Hinge on Deficit Reduction Committee Making Recommendations Thursday
There's more than one real reason for a number of curriculum changes taking effect with the next school year at Monmouth-Roseville High School.

That's according to District-238 Superintendent Paul Woehlke, who says the school board there recently approved some changes to the class schedule in order to address deficiencies in reading and math scores that put the school on the state's Academic Early Warning list, and have caused the school to fail to make Adequate Yearly Progress under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Woehlke says the goal was to provide some additional tutoring and coursework in those areas while not spending any more money, and tells WGIL the budget was a crucial consideration.

"Another piece of the puzzle...was to prepare for some of the recommendations the Deficit Reduction Committee might make in terms of the cost reductions," Woehlke said. "We wanted to adjust our curriculum to be able to accommodate some things that may be coming at us from that regard."

The Deficit Reduction Committee has been looking at ways to trim six-figures from the district's budget, which has had a deficit every year since consolidation, and especially in light of the ongoing state budget debacle which has left the district owed a lot of money by the state as well.

The committee, by the way, is expected to make its recommendations to a special District-238 School Board meeting Thursday night at seven o'clock at the Central Early Childhood Center.
