Officials Disappointed in Voter Turnout
Many registered voters opted to stay away from the polls during this year's Illinois primary election compared to the past.

The trend statewide was felt in both Knox County and the City of Galesburg, where voters cast ballots for three local races and some key statewide races like governor and senator.

Knox County Clerk Scott Erickson tells WGIL the low voter turnout in the county wasn't a surprise.

"We were kind of expecting some lower numbers," Erickson said. "Right now, it looks like the unnofficial results are about 17.5% voter turnout. I was originally predicting anywhere from 20% to 25%, but it wasn't too bad. There's just a lot of factors that keep some of the voters from voting in a primary."

Erickson says primary elections are unique and it's hard to tell what the final tally will be. He says he was relieved that the weather wasn't bad, which would have most likely resulted in even lower numbers.

Voter turnout in the City of Galesburg was a little over 19 percent. The turnout in Warren County was around 22 percent. All of the numbers are lower than primary elections of the past, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections, which says the average has been 37 percent and higher in previous years.
