CSC Board Approves New Teacher Aide Certificate
Students interested in careers as a teacher aid or child care worker will be able to achieve the necessary certification at Carl Sandburg College.

The CSC Board of Trustees Thursday night unanimously approved the new Child Care/Paraprofessional Certificate program. The state requires anyone seeking to be a teacher or classroom aide to complete 60 hours of college credit or pass a competency test to meet guidelines under the No Child Left Behind Act.

Carl Sandburg College Vice President of Academic Services Dr. Lori Sundberg told the board students in the program will be well-prepared when they complete it.

"(The certificate will deal with) the coursework in child development, educational theory and method, child psychology, and appropriate general education curriculum, to work toward the 60-hour requirement," Sundberg said. "In addition to preparation for a career as an education paraprofessional, this certificate also prepares individuals for employment as a Child Care Worker."

The next step is submitting the certificate to the Illinois Community College Board for consideration.

The CSC Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Jill Johnson as interim associate dean of the humanities and performing arts department and associate dean of the social and behavioral sciences department. The board also approved the appointment of Dave Burns as associate dean of the math and natural sciences department.
