Moffitt Takes on Toy-Looking Lighters
It could be a deadly conversation piece: A cigarette lighter that can be mistaken for a toy or looks like a cartoon character. A bill which has passed a committee in the Illinois House would ban such "attractive nuisances."

The bill's supporters say simply telling kids to stay away from a lighter is easier said than done. Chuck Vaughn, a lobbyist for the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association and the Illinois Fire Protection Districts Association, says, "Let me speak to you now as the grandfather of two 3-year-olds and two 5-year-olds: you can train the hell out of them, but when they see a toy, it belongs to them."

The sponsor, State Rep. Don Moffitt (R-Gilson), says what's more, most or all of these products are imported and include lead-based paint.

HB 5139 has passed the House Consumer Protection Committee.
