Another Group Suggests Tax Increase = School Funding
Schools across the state are suffering large budget cuts and staff layoffs. Much of the problem comes from unpaid state bills. The state faces a multi-billion dollar budget deficit, and a former state school superintendent says there is only one way to fix the problem.

Max McGee, president of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, says the state must raise taxes to generate more revenue for schools districts, but he says that should be coupled with educational reforms. McGee supports extending the sales tax in Illinois to cover services, and he also supports a graduated income tax.

New revenue alone will not be enough, says McGee. He says some school funding should be reallocated to programs that are known to be successful and away from those that aren't.
