Census Takers Still Needed
Uncle Sam wants you...to be a census taker.

Illinois congressmen are stressing the importance of the Census Bureau's employment recruitment efforts. The Census Bureau says it must attract about 100,000 applicants for possible work as census takers.

"Being counted in the census benefits your community and ensures that you are represented by your government," said U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston). "We want people to mail in their census questionnaires and we also want people to apply for the census taker jobs that are available."

The Census has been conducted every decade since 1790. The Census Bureau hires locally and applicants are required to take a basic skills test and a background check. Census takers must speak English. According to Schakowsky, starting pay for census takers in the Chicago area is $18.25 per hour.
