Outsider Wins Democratic Nod for Lieutenant Governor
Decades of experience in the General Assembly could not stop a candidate described as a millionaire pawnbroker -- who's been accused of domestic violence -- from winning the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor.

Scott Cohen won a six-way race Tuesday, in a field that included two state representatives and two senators. The representatives, Art Turner (D-Chicago) and Mike Boland (D-East Moline), will give up their seats after this year.

Turner, the second-place finisher, says Cohen's money won it, adding he might have pulled it out had he had more time. Turner says Illinois' first-in-the-nation primary reduces the effective campaign time to six weeks.

Boland, while looking forward to being able to spend more time with his grandchildren, pointed fingers at both the news media and at the state's Democratic Party chair, House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago), for not doing more to expose and/or slow down Cohen's campaign.

The lieutenant governor position has been unfilled since the current governor, Pat Quinn, succeeded the impeached Rod Blagojevich. Cohen will face another self-funded candidate in November -- Republican Jason Plummer.
