F & M Bank Warns of Text Message-Based Scam
Banks hardly ever call you looking for personal information so your account can be accessed, and officials with one lending institution in town say they're not doing that, even though if you're a "texter" you might have been led to think differently.

Officials with F & M Bank are sounding the alarm after they say some local residents might have gotten scammed.

They say the residents -- some possibly customers and some not -- were sent a text message on their cell phones telling them a bank alert was in effect, and to call a phone number listed as 210-688-1431. The number then asks the callers to enter their ATM or debit card number, the pin number, and the three-digit number on the back of the card.

The number, obviously, is not a local phone number, and calling customers asking for such information is not how the F & M, or any other bank, typically does business.

They say don't make calls like that, and that if you do get such a message asking you to do that, call the bank. You can also call Galesburg Police, with whom the bank says they're working to try and get the number.

Research indicates the 210 area code covers the San Antonio, Texas area.
