Significant Snowfall Expected in Galesburg Area
UPDATED 11:00am 2/8/10 CHICAGO (AP) -- A winter storm warning is looming for northern Illinois, and the forecast calls for accumulations of up to 12 inches of snow.

The National Weather Service says the warning takes effect at 9:00 Monday night and will continue until 4 a.m. Wednesday. Meanwhile, a WINTER STORM WATCH is in effect for the Galesburg area from 12 p.m. Monday until 6:00 Wednesday morning.

The weather service says between 6 and 12 inches of snow are expected in the northern part of the state by Tuesday night, and even more could pile up near Lake Michigan. Locally, forecasters estimate 4 to 7 inches of snow by Tuesday night combined with wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour.

If that scenario plays out, travel will become dangerous with blowing snow causing visibility problems, especially in open areas.

The City of Knoxville is implementing a Snow Emergency Monday at 8 pm until Wednesday at 8 am. The City of Galesburg will do the same once the total amount of snow totals two inches or more. Parking on city streets is prohibited when a Snow Emergency is in effect. Vehicles parked on streets risk being towed.
