Feds Have Plan to Stop Asian Carp
A new action plan, released by the Asian Carp Workgroup, calls for several short-term and long-term moves to stop the invasive species from threatening Lake Michigan and the rest of the Great Lakes. But one group is immediately dismissing the plan.

Nancy Sutley, chairwoman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, calls it a "multi-tiered defense plan." She and other federal government officials say it includes closing the Chicago locks more often, having a backup plan to keep fish from getting through the locks when they're open, and other moves. The Obama Administration plans to spend $78.5 million on efforts to stop Asian Carp from taking over the Great Lakes.

It's not a good plan, according to Henry Henderson, director of the Midwest program at Natural Resources Defense Council. He calls the plan "vastly underwhelming." He says the plan is nothing but political compromises and not decisive action based on science.

The state of Michigan probably won't like the plan either. Officials there want the locks closed permanently.
