Abingdon School Board Rejects After-Prom Insurance
The Abingdon School Board is not changing its policy on whether the organizers of an After-Prom event , or any event not directly put on by the school district, for that matter, have to provide liability insurance.

The District-217 Board Wednesday night refused to alter its building use policy, after a month or more of discussions between parents organizing an After-Prom for students, and district officials.

The parents wanted the district to either waive the liability requirement or provide money for such supplemental insurance, but school board president Jim Bloomberg says as much as he supports After-Prom and other non school sponsored events that use district facilities, spending the money for the additional insurance is a bad idea.

"To me it's a wrong message, if we're going to cut good teachers, to put money in After Prom - and I'm not picking on After Prom - but I mean anything that were talking about, little boys and girls stuff, After Prom, or any extracurricular activity where the community, or the parents or anybody uses our buildings,... to use."

Parents walked out of the meeting before we could seek comment from them. One business has offered to sponsor after-prom, but it's not clear if that's happening.

The district would also have had to provide staff to supervise the event, and a collective bargaining agreement with the district's teachers union would have to be renegotiated.
