Status of State Police Interim Director Still Uncertain
(IRN)-The man in charge of the Illinois State Police is acting director Jonathon Monken. That's been the case for almost two years, as the state Senate has never confirmed him.

Monken's appointment has carried over into a new General Assembly, and there hasn't been any change. The Senate has passed a bill that would let such appointments expire in the future.

The 31-year-old Monken is a military veteran whose youth and lack of police experience have made him an unpopular choice. State Senate President John Cullerton says the Senate let it go two years ago as a courtesy to Gov. Pat Quinn, who had just taken office. Now it's more controversial than ever, as Cullerton’s office last month asked the comptroller's office not to pay Monken and other holdover appointees.

In an e-mailed statement, Quinn press secretary Annie Thompson says: "Jonathon Monken continues to lead the Illinois State Police. Governor Quinn continues to finalize his top administration and in fact has already announced two rounds of appointments. Additional decisions will be announced throughout the first quarter."

SB 1 has passed the Senate.
