FBI Probes Reported Mount Vernon Cross Burning
MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (AP) -- The FBI is helping investigate a reported cross-burning in a black family's yard in the southern Illinois city of Mount Vernon.

Clark Crable told police he was awakened about 1 a.m. Monday by his dog barking and another occupant of the home yelling. Then he says he found the 6-foot-tall cross ablaze outside.

Crable says he's lived at the house for five or six years and hasn't had any such threats.

He believes it could be related to the fact that he's married to a white woman.

Police say it's the first incident of its kind in the city in recent memory.
