Snow Emergency Means Keep Streets Clear
Galesburg City officials say they're taking this winter storm very seriously, especially when it comes to cars parked on the street.

Galesburg Fire Chief and Knox County Emergency Management Agency Director Tom Simkins says he's heard from Police that since a Snow Emergency is in effect in town, they'll be serious about getting vehicles parked on any city street ticketed ahead of being towed.

Simkins tells WGIL that's because plowing the streets is otherwise much more difficult.

"If you leave your vehicle on the street it's probably going to get plowed under and the the crews might no see it, and it might get struck so it's for everybody's safety including our personnel that you do get the streets cleared and the vehicles into the driveway somewhere, so that paramount."

Simkins says he and other city and county officials met Monday to discuss and coordinate responses to the storm.

City officials also urge avoiding calling 911 if you have a problem and it's not a true emergency. They say you can always call the non-emergency number as necessary.
