Weather Warms Up
(IRN)-Call it a gift from St. Valentine; warm weather this week is offering us a short respite from what has been a cold winter.

Warmer than usual temperatures will hang around for a while, and that has the National Weather Service keeping an eye on streams and rivers, as snow and ice melt. But meteorologist Matt Barnes at the weather service office in Lincoln says any significant flooding is a long shot.

"That’s something we’re going to keep our eyes on over the next few days, although it does appear that with the temperatures slowly moderating, melting will be a little slower than what it could be so obviously the river levels will come up," Barnes said. He says with a freeze-thaw cycle, warmer temperatures during the day and cooler temperatures at night, combined with a little or no precipitation, the chances for major flooding are slim.

The warm temperatures are forecast to last through much of the week and Barnes says some areas could see most or all of their snow cover melt.
