Mitsubishi Manager Feared Plant Would Close
NORMAL, Ill. (AP) -- The executive vice president of the Mitsubishi auto plant in Normal says he feared the plant would close.

Jerry Berwanger tells The (Bloomington) Pantagraph that when a deadline passed last September to bring a new model to the plant he was very worried.

But Mitsubishi this month said it will build its new Outlander Sport SUV in Normal. That means the plant's 1,300 jobs stay in town.

Hourly workers agreed to pay cuts to keep it open. Berwanger says talk of closing if employees didn't agree to work for less wasn't an idle threat.

Production of the new SUV is due to start next year.
Berwanger says half of the 50,000 Outlanders expected to be made the first year will be exported.
