Congress Discusses Malpractice Caps
(IRN)-Will President Barack Obama ever move to initiate medical malpractice caps? At least one Illinois congressman doesn't think it will happen anytime soon.

U.S. Representative Peter Roskam says he and his colleagues in congress will continue to push for medical malpractice reforms because it is an important step, according to some, in keeping health care costs down and keeping doctors from leaving their industry. But Roskam isn't so sure that the senate or Obama would take up the issue. He doesn't think Democrats would consider caps on non-economic damages.

"Even in his AMA speech the president never made commitments to caps, he spoke directly about defensive medicine," Roskam said. "I think that that's weakness of how they are approaching it and it comes off like they are parsing. They would argue that they are not."

Some states have adopted their own caps, but Illinois is not one of them.
