NIU Remembers Shooting Three Years Ago
(IRN)-Students gathered at Northern Illinois University Monday to remember those who lost their lives in an on-campus shooting three years ago.

A wreath laying ceremony was held to remember the shooting tragedy that took place at Cole Hall on Valentine’s Day 2008.

NIU president John Peters spoke for about five minutes at a permanent memorial that was erected to the five victims.

"As each new generation of Huskies come and go, it is Catalina, Gayle, Julianna, Ryanne and Dan that remain," Peters said. "For it is their accomplishments, their courage, their spirit and their pride that are the real permanent memorial."

A mentally unstable former NIU student, Steven Kazmierczak, opened fire in the lecture hall full of approximately 120 students. He killed five people before taking his own life.

Since that 2008 shooting, the school has held memorial services each year and besides the memorial, has created a website to help the NIU community in the healing process.

Cole Hall, which has been closed since the tragedy, has been undergoing renovations and will reopen for use in the fall.
