SIUC Unions Oppose Closure Days, Hold Rally
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) -- Several unions at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale say they oppose unpaid closure days while contract negotiations are in the works.

WSIU Radio reports six unions making up a university labor coalition held a rally Monday.
Fraternal Order of Police spokesman James Daniels says they don't want more money, but a promise that future jobs will be protected.

Chancellor Rita Cheng has proposed four campus-wide closure days to avoid layoffs, potentially saving more than $2 million dollars. She has said the closure days will not affect employee health insurance or vacation and sick leave benefits.
