IL Military Projects May See Money Under Federal Budget Plan
(IRN)-Included in President Obama's budget is cash for five military construction projects in Illinois.

Projects include almost $17 million for demolition of the outdated health clinic at Great Lakes Naval Station and additional dollars for new construction. One new construction project is an Army National Guard Readiness Center in Normal. Illinois National Guard Public spokesman Maj. Brad Leighton says the $10 million facility will be shared-use space with Heartland Community College.

"The agreement with Heartland is going to allow for about 12,000 [square] feet of shared space," Leighton said. "We're going to build six classrooms at Heartland that they'll be able to use during the week and then during the weekends when we have our guys in we'll be using them," Leighton said. He says it's important to continue building new facilities that have the ability to teach modern military methods.

If the budget is passed as is, Illinois is set to receive $146,742 million for military construction projects.

2012 budget requests:

- Great Lakes Naval Station, decentralize stream system, $91.042 million
- Great Lakes Naval Station, health clinic demolitions, $16.9 million
- Homewood Army Reserve Center, $16 million
- Normal Army National Guard Readiness Center, $10 million
- Rockford Army Reserve Center, $12.8 million
