IL Library Systems Merging as They Await Funding
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Nine library systems that link hundreds of libraries around the state plan to merge into two systems at least in part because of a slowdown in state funding.

Jan Ison is director of the Lincoln Trail Libraries System. He told The News-Gazette in Champaign that his group and three others downstate will merge in July. Five northern Illinois systems will merge, too.

The library systems arrange loans of books between libraries, and provide other services. Lincoln Trail, for instance, manages the system its libraries use to track books.

The state is months behind on payments that make up most of the library systems' budgets. The state budget crisis has led to lengthy delays for state-dependent agencies and institutions for well over a year.

Ison said some jobs could be lost.
