Comptroller-Treasurer Merger Advances to Senate
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Efforts to merge the offices of Illinois comptroller and treasurer are again advancing in the Legislature.

The Senate Executive Committee voted without opposition Wednesday to send the proposal to the Senate floor.

It would require voters' approval in 2012 on a constitutional amendment to create one office of "comptroller of the treasury" in 2015.

Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, formerly a three-term treasurer, says it would save $12 million a year.

She says the reasons the job of auditor was divided into comptroller and treasurer in the 1970 Constitution are gone because the offices work closely together and government is more transparent.

Treasurer Dan Rutherford also supports the measure.
