Regional Superintendent Shocked By Sudden Proposed Funding Cut
It wasn't long ago Governor Pat Quinn announced a commission to look at ways to streamline education, which included some regional school superintendents from around the state.

Now the governor is saying regional superintendents aren't needed at all, and proposes cutting their $14 million funding in fiscal year 2012.

Regional Superintendent Jodi Scott for Warren, Mercer, and Henderson Counties, however, tells WGIL its a bit of a contradiction.

"It really was from left field, we as an organization have not as an organization have heard any rumblings of any regional offices being eliminated. At this point, a lot of the planning and some of the bills that have passed have included the regional offices as large parts of those bills, so it did come as a complete surprise."

Scott says the cut came as a complete surprise and even if the positions are eliminated, the work still has to be done.

She says superintendents will likely begin contacting local legislators to make their case against the cuts.

Knox County Regional Superintendent Bonnie Harris was out of the area when we sought comment.
