Knox County Girl Continues Mission Trip Near the Equator
A Knox County girl is still fulfilling her mission of giving backpacks full of supplies and other needs to school children in a country near the Equator.

12-year-old Kiera Spilman of Oneida and her father Bill are in Guatemala taking part in a week full of mission-related activities ahead of the actual delivery taking place Saturday.

But the Spilmans have been in Guatemala since Monday night, and Kiera tells WGIL she helped teach English to some students in a school earlier in this week, and noticed just how much different that learning environment is than schools here.

"They're building more rooms on to this school, but they only have one teacher to teach, like, 40 kids. It was an experience," Kiera Spilman said. "This is in a public school, and it was a bit chaotic."

Kiera Spilman says the teacher usually tries to switch inbetween rooms teaching students, spending about a half-hour in each room.

And that led to what was in her words a lot of rowdy students, throwing books and desks and generally just acting up.

Spilman says she has tried to have fun with the students even though she's not much able to talk to them.
