Police Still Advise Staying Home if Necessary
The Galesburg Police Department is still doing one thing, even though conditions following the blizzard are improving somewhat.

"If you don't have to be out, just stay home. It's getting better now but stay home the best you can and stay off the streets until they get cleaned up."

Galesburg Police Captain Rod Riggs estimates that about 95 percent of the calls officers have responded to in the last 24 to 36 hours have simply dealt with cars getting stuck in the snow.

And Riggs tells WGIL officers responding to those calls in some occasions had to deal with that same problem themselves.

"Guys had a real hard time getting around town, they just could get traction, got stuck a few times. We did utilize our big four wheel drive truck that we have we used that quit a bit last night."

Riggs says for the most part, officers were able to get their squad cars out of snow drifts without much in the way of problems. He also says staffing hasn't been a problem in the last day, though officers did have to go pick up other officers to get them into work due to the snow, but all in all, things are okay.

Riggs says you can't really plan for any sort of response to a snowstorm like this. He says you just have to get it done.
