Durbin Comments on Bahrain Unrest
(IRN) -- U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says the United States should worry not only about the stability of countries in the Middle East, but also of the impact the region has on the security of our nation.

Durbin's comments came Friday after soldiers opened fire on thousands of protestors in Bahrain.

One doctor at the main hospital in Bahrain is describing the situation there as "a war." At least 50 people were injured, some with gunshot wounds.

Bahrain is home to an American naval fleet and home to many U.S. service members. Durbin says he is worried for their safety, should things in that country get worse. The U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet keeps a watchful eye on Iran and oversees the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.

Protesters Friday described a chaotic scene with tear gas clouds, bullets coming from many directions and people slipping in pools of blood as they sought cover.

Bahrain's king has appointed Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa to lead a dialogue "with all parties," though it's unclear whether the now furious protesters will respond to the overture.
