Quinn Says New Hires Necessary Despite Budget Debacle
(IRN) -- Gov. Pat Quinn is defending the additional state employees in his state budget proposal despite the states poor fiscal situation.

Quinn says some of the hiring is mandated by law. For example, he says additional inspectors to make sure nursing homes are safe and following the law is required by a new law that was recently enacted.

He is also touting some of the hires as cost-saving measures. He points to prisons that were short-staffed and left guards racking up overtime. Quinn says it's cheaper to hire more guards and train them then to continue to pay the overtime costs.

An analysis of Quinn's budget proposal by House Democrats show a total of 945 additional hires in corrections, transportation, public health and veterans affairs. Opponents say it's too soon to tell if some of the hires would save the state money.

Quinn says the hiring of additional employees still leaves Illinois with one of the smallest state workforces in the nation.
