Maple Syrup-Making Time Starts in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) _ Visitors learned how to tap trees and make maple syrup from scratch at the Lincoln Memorial Garden in Springfield over the weekend.

The State Journal-Register reports that Maple Syrup Time is a tradition at the garden. It was the first of four weekends that maple syrup-making demonstrations are scheduled through March 13.

Groups are taught how to select a maple tree and then tour guides show participants sap flowing from tapped trees. Sap is then boiled to create syrup.

Chuck Allen is a gardener at the center. He leads demonstrations and says he thinks ``it's a learning thing for most people.''
