City to Apply for Million Dollar Transit Grant
A long-planned new facilitiy to be the home of the Galesburg Transit bus system could be one step closer to reality after tonight's Galesburg City Council meeting.

Aldermen Monday are scheduled to vote on allowing the city to apply for a $1.8 million grant through the Illinois Department of Transportation for a new bus garage facility.

It's the culmination, essentially, of years worth of work and previous grant applications. City officials say they started work on this plan in 2007, initially getting a half-million dollars to get going on the planning and development. Another $300,000 was added later, followed by another $850,000.

Last year, the city purchased land at Monmouth Boulevard and Harding Street for the garage, and city officials now say the final agreement will allow for construction to possibly begin.

The Galesburg City Council will also consider a resolution supporting a proposed statue of Carl Sandburg in the city's Central Park, when they meet at 6:30pm Monday inside council chambers at City Hall.
