Honoring Farmers in the Checkout Line
This week, local agriculture officials say, is an important week in terms of grocery shopping.

The Knox County Farm Bureau says this marks the week on the calendar where American families earn enough income to be able to purchase food for the entire year.

The Farm Bureau is celebrating "Food Check-Out Week," and they do so with an annual grocery race, this year pitting two teams against each other trying to collect a list full of groceries first at the Henderson Street Hy Vee Store.

But Farm Bureau Director Kelly Wagahoff tells WGIL there was a twist this year.

"One team this year was racing for items that only contain soy products, and the other teams was racing for items that only contain corn products."

Wagahoff tells WGIL there was a good reason for that.

"A lot of items, if you're in the store you realize, you know, contain those items you might no think about it but they actually do."

Wagahoff says she hopes Food Check-Out Week sends a message of just how important the American farmer is to the economy, and that yes, corn and soybeans are grown right here in Knox County.

All the items collected Monday were donated to the FISH Food Pantry.
